IndoPacific Edelman and Blogfam Hold “Indonesian Blogger Survey 2009”
Jakarta, May 19, 2009 - IndoPacific Edelman, a communications firm in Indonesia, today exposes the findings of the “Indonesian Blogger Survey 2009”, in collaboration with Blogfam, a blogger community in Indonesia. The survey is the first comprehensive study conducted in the country to find out more about Indonesian bloggers’ profiles and their blog activities.
We have watched weblogs increase significantly in popularity in Indonesia since the beginning of this decade. In early 2000, only a few people were active in the blogosphere. However, by the end of this year, the number of Indonesian bloggers, who are largely concentrated on blogspot.com or wordpress.com, could reach up to one million.
“IndoPacific Edelman is taking a serious look at the digital world as a huge media developing in Indonesia,” said IndoPacific Edelman Director Nanda Ivens. “Many of our clients have started to use digital channels to reach out to their stakeholders, not only through their official sites, but also through social networking sites, blogs and microblogs. A good comprehension of Indonesian blogger profiles will have a massive effect on the success of digital communications strategies.”
The survey was conducted from the end of 2008 to early 2009, with 200 blogger respondents. Most of the bloggers live in Jakarta (45 percent), while others live in various cities in Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali and Papua. Among the respondents, 61 percent have been blogging for 1-2 years.
Indonesian bloggers are also active social media users. Most bloggers have more than three accounts on social networking sites. The most-frequently used social networking sites are Friendster (85 percent), Facebook (76 percent), and Multiply (60 percent).
Generally, the reasons they are active in blogging is to share their experiences (65 percent), express their opinions (54 percent), channel a writing hobby (53 percent) or earn money through advertisements on their blogs (eight percent). The bloggers spend 1-5 hours on blogging (55 percent).
The topics discussed on their blogs range from hobbies (78%), personal life (67%), work-related issues (39%), and personal opinions regarding current issues (23%) to reviews on products and programs (6%).
Male bloggers often post topics on their blogs concerning technology (44%) and social/human interest (35%), while female bloggers often post regarding entertainment (41%) and travel and leisure (31%).
When searching for information on blogs, most search for topics on technology (43%), social/human interest (37%), travel (34%), entertainment (31%), while the least searched topic is personal issues (7%). Male bloggers tend to be interested in technology (57%) and social issues (41%), whereas female bloggers are more interested in traveling (46%) and culinary-related topics.
Although bloggers still rely on traditional media such as newspapers (77%) and TV (57%) as their primary sources of information, new media such as news portals (60%), blogs (49%), or online community forums (32%) and corporate sites (32%) also garner significant trust as a source of information for bloggers.
“IndoPacific Edelman has positioned communications strategies in the digital domain as one of our strengths,” IndoPacific Edelman Chairperson Chadd McLisky explained. “We will continue to invest in increasing the knowledge of all of our public relations consultants in social media and digital, as well as understanding the social media world in Indonesia”, he continued.
